费尔南多·佩索阿在《惶然录》中不无伤感的写道:“当我事实上仅仅是一个会计助理的时候,我凭哪一点把自己叫做天才?”佩索阿生前确实藉藉无名。从20多岁到47岁逝世,他任职于同一家小公司,一直没有换过工作。他承认自己和他人的雷同,然而,“在这个雷同的后面,我偷偷地把星星散布于自己个人的天空,在那里创作我的无限”。他创造无限的方式就是写作,不断的写。他生前只出过一本诗集《音讯》,1935年,当他去世时,人们发现了他那个著名的、藏着两万七千份文件的大箱子,里面有他写下的一万多首诗。但他却对那份“据此得到一份午间快餐般的刚刚够我生存的工资”的会计工作心存感激,因为“平庸是智力的一种构造,而现实,特别是当它是野蛮和粗俗的时候,就形成了一种对心灵的自然填补”。说的直白一点,人首先要生存,而职业,正是对抗贫穷生活的一种妥协。每天干着肮脏的体力活,晚上到酒吧喝得烂醉,回家还要在打字机前敲出诗句——这就是查尔斯·布考斯基(20世纪美国最有影响力的诗人、小说家之一)的生活。向佩索阿那样安于一辈子干一份工作的,毕竟是特例。如果一个诗人一直处于社会底层,在生活中看不到什么出路,内心和现实的巨大反差会打败他,令他彻底崩溃。
查尔斯·布考斯基也是大半生处于社会底层的,除了当邮递员,他还干过如下工作:洗碗工,卡车司机,装卸工,门卫,加油站服务员,库房跟班,仓库管理员,船务文员,停车场服务员,电梯操作员,狗饼干厂、屠宰场、蛋糕和曲奇饼干工厂的工作人员,纽约地铁海报张贴员等等。幸好,在被生活彻底打败之前,文学经纪人约翰·马丁发现了他。马丁成为他的经纪人,并专门为他成立了一家出版公司,每月支付他100美元的生活补贴,而且是终身提供。100美元,相当于他当时月收入的1/4,在20世纪60年代的美国,已经能应付生活有余。布考斯基由此辞掉了邮局的工作——这已经是他干的时间最长的一份工作了,专心写作,用4周时间完成了第一部长篇小说《邮差》。约翰·马丁惊讶于他怎么能这么快写完一部小说,布考斯基回答说是因为“恐惧”。他应该是不敢想象被打回原形会怎么样,所以才感到恐惧吧。在根据他的自传体小说《苍蝇酒吧》改编的同名电影里,可以看到他以前的生活是什么样的:每天干着肮脏的体力活,晚上到酒吧喝得烂醉,回家还要在打字机前敲出诗句……在《给一个青年诗人的十封信》中,诗人里尔克劝慰向他吐槽工作枯燥的青年,说一切职业都是那样。“亲爱的卡卜斯先生,凡是你现在做军官所必须经验的,你也许在任何一种现有的职业里都会感到,甚至纵使你脱离各种职务,独自同社会寻找一种轻易而独立的接触,这种压迫之感也不会对你有什么减轻。——到处都是一样……”而在里尔克晚年,有年轻人问他当作家会怎么样,他忠告他们,一定要有一个“稳定职业”。但他自己却做不到。他的一生都在漂泊中度过。在写给妻子克拉拉的一封信中,里尔克谈到画家塞尚,说塞尚在40岁以前过着“流浪艺人”生活,后30年否极泰来,因为他父亲发了财,塞尚得以安心创作。羡慕归羡慕,尼尔克却没有那个命,他一生都在寻找自己的“艺术赞助人”。
“无论什么人,只要你在活着的时候应付不了生活,就应该用这一只手挡开点儿笼罩着你的命运的绝望……但同时,你可以用另一只手草草记下你在废墟中看到的一切,因为你和别人看到的不同,而且更多;总之,你在自己的有生之年就已经死了,但你却是真正的获救者。”这话是卡夫卡说的。
