Weseetheawardsasarecognitionnotonlyofourselvesandouraccomplishmentsbutalsoofourcollaboratorsinthestudyofthespatialfunctionsofthehippocampus,andourcolleaguesinthewiderfieldofcognitiveandbehaviouralneuroscience.Cognitiveneuroscienceisenteringanexcitingerainwhichnewtechnologiesandideasaremakingit4/4 诺贝尔生理学奖得主约翰·奥基夫在颁奖晚宴上英语演讲稿possibletostudytheneuralbasisofcognition,perception,memoryandemotionatthelevelofnetworksofinteractingneurons,thelevelatwhichwebelievemanyoftheimportantoperationsofthebraintakeplace.Weknowaconsiderableamountabouthowindividualneuronsworkandhowtwocellscancommunicatewitheachotherbutthewayinwhichentirenetworksofhundredsandthousandsofneuronscooperate,interactwitheachother,andareorchestratedtocreateourideasandconceptsisanunderexploredareaofneuroscience.Itisprobablyatthislevelthatnetworkfailureoccursandleadstosomeofourmostdisturbingandintractablediseasesofthemindandbrain.  Thisnewareaofneurosciencehasbeenmadepossiblebythedevelopmentofnewoptical,computer-basedelectronic,andmolecularbiologicaltoolswhichwillallowustomonitortheactivityofmanythousandsofcellssimultaneouslyandtomanipulatetheiractivity.Wewillmovefromlookingatcorrelationsbetweenbrainactivityandbehaviourtostudyinghowthebraincausesmental4/4 诺贝尔生理学奖得主约翰·奥基夫在颁奖晚宴上英语演讲稿statesandbehaviour.Itisfittingthereforethatourfellowlaureatesthisyearinphysicsandchemistryareworld’sleadersinprovidinguswithsomeofthesetools.Weareeagertobegintousesomeofthelaser-basedopticaltechniquesbeingdevelopedbyourchemistryco-laureates.  Wearealsopleasedtobereceivingtheprizewithlaureatesfromsomanydifferentcountries.ScienceisthequintessentialinternationalendeavourandthesterlingreputationoftheNobelawardsispartlyduetothewidely-perceivedlackofnationalandotherbiasesintheselectionofthelaureates.Webelievethatthefuturegreatcontributionstoourunderstandingofthebiologicalandphysicalworldcancomefromcitizensofanycountryinanypartoftheworld.ItistothecreditoftheNobelcommitteesthattheyhavesteadfastlyendeavouredtofollowAlfredNobel’swishesthattheprizesrecognisecontributionstothewelfareofhumanityregardlessofcountryoforigin,gender,raceorreligiousaffiliation.
