FrankJewettbelievedthatthebestscienceandtechnologyresultfrombringingtogetherandnurturingthebestminds.Underhistenure,BellLabslaidthefoundationforanewscientificdiscipline,radioastronomy,andtransformedmoviesbysynchronizingsoundtopictures.BellLabswasthefirsttotransmittelevisionoveralongdistanceintheU.S.anddesignedthefirstelectricaldigitalcomputer.BellLabswonitsfirstNobelPrizeinphysicsforfundamentalworkdemonstratingthewavenatureofmatter.OliverBuckleypilotedBellLabsthroughrapidgrowthduringandafterWorldWarII.BellLabscreatedmostofthenation"smilitarycommunicationssystemsandmuchoftheradarequipment.BellLabsdevelopedthetransistor,thepivotalinventionthathastransformedcomputersandcommunicationsforhalfacenturyandforwhichBellLabswasawardedtheNobelPrizeinphysics.BellLabspioneeredtheconceptofcellularwirelesscommunications.TheMurrayHillLaboratoriesopened・MervinKellyorganizedcloserlinksbetweenresearchanddevelopmentandmanufacturing.BellLabsconceivedthelaser,nowwidelyusedincommunications,medicine,measurementandmanufacturing・Thesolarcell,whichmadecommunicationssatellitespossible,wasdeveloped.BellLabsdevelopedoxidemasksformicrochipmanufactureandasuperconducto匚Directdialingoflongdistancecallswasintroduced.
JamesFisk"stenureincludedthedevelopmentofTelstar,thefirstcommunicationssatellite,andsystemsengineeringfortheApolloSpaceProgram,whichputthefirstpeopleonthemoon.Othermajoradvancesincludedthecarbondioxidelaser,molecularbeamepitaxyforsemiconductorchipmanufacture,digitaltransmission,andtheUnixoperatingsystem.BellLabsdevelopedtouchtonetelephonesandthefirstPicturephoneservice,1ESS®transistorizedswitch,andstoredprogramcontrol.WilliamBakerwaspresidentasBellLabsresearcherswonNobelPrizesinphysicsfortheimprovedunderstandingoftheelectronicstructureofglassandmagneticmaterialsandfordiscoveringbackgroundradiationremainingfromthebigbangthatcreatedtheuniversebillionsofyearsago.Advancesinlasersandglassfiberledtothefirstoperationalfiber-opticsystem.BellLabsdevelopedtheCprogramminglanguage,the4ESS®tollswitch,andout-of-bandsignaling.IanRossledBellLabsthroughthereorganizationthatfollowedthebreakupoftheBellSystemandtheconversionofAT&Tslong-distancenetworkfromanalogtodigitalswitchingandtransmission.BellLabsearnedmorethan5,000ofitspatenls.Innovationsineludedthefirst
transoceanicfiber-opticcable,opticalamplificationthrougherbiumdoping,speechrecognition,the5ESS®digitalswitch,digitalcellularwireless,andtheC++computinglanguage.BellLabsalsowontwoNationalMedalsofTechnology.JohnMayoforgedclosertiesbetweenresearchanddevelopmentandthecompany"sbusinessunitsandglobalizedBellLabs.Advancesinfiberopticsledtomultigigabitsystemsthatcircletheglobe.Otheradvancescameinsoftware,microelectronics,wirelesscommunications,personalvideo,andreal-timelanguagetranslation.BellLabsdevelopedhighdefinitiontelevisionandinteractivetelevisionsystems.Mayo,whoalsowonthesecondNationalMedalofTechnologyforBellLabs,sawfourmoreresearcherswinNationalMedalsofTechnology・DanStanzionebecametheeighthBellLabspresidentaftera22-yearcareerasasoftwarescientistandbusinessmanage匚Whenhebecamepresident,abouttwo-thirdsoftheresearchanddevelopmentactivityatBellLabswenttowardscreatingsoftware,whichunderliesswitchingsystems,fiberoptics,longdistancecommunications,wirelessservicesandmicroelectronics.HeguidedBellLabsthroughtheperiodwhenLucentTechnologieswasseparatedfromAT&T.
ArunNetravali,theninthpresidentinBellLabs1history,wasalsoLucent"schieftechnologyofficerandchiefnetworkarchitectduringhistenure.Netravali,nowLucent"schiefscientist,continuestoworkwiththeacademicandinvestmentcommunitiestoidentifynewtechnologiesthatwillberelevanttoLucenfsmission,andactsasanadvisortoLucentfsseniormanagementontechnicalandcustomerissues・UnderNetravalifsleadership,thespeedwithwhichLucentmoveditsinnovationsfromlabtomarketincreaseddramatically,ashefosteredstrongerpartnershipsbetweenBellLabsandLucenfsbusinesses,withoutsacrificingtechnicalexcellence・DeNetravaliisregardedasapioneerinthefieldofdigitaltechnologyandledtheresearchanddevelopmentofBellLabs"highdefinitiontelevision(HDTV)effort.Hehasauthoredmorethan170technicalpapersandco-authoredthreebooks:DigitalPictureRepresentationandCompression,(Plenum,1987),VisualCommunicationsSystems,(IEEEPress,1989)andDigitalVideo:AnIntroductiontoMPEG-2,(ChapmanandHall,1996).Heholdsmorethan70patentsintheareasofcomputernetworks,humaninterfacestomachines,pictureprocessinganddigitaltelevision.In2001,healsoreceivedfromtheIndiangovernmentthePadmaBhushanAward,thenation"sthirdhighestcivilianhonor.Dr.NetravaliisamemberofTauBetaPhiandSigmaXi,afellowoftheInstituteofElectricalandElectronicEngineers(IEEE),andAAASandamemberoftheUnitedStatesNationalAcademyofEngineering.Forhisscientificachievements,hehasreceivednumerousawards,includingtheAlexanderGrahamBellMedal(1991)anEMMYfortheHDTVGrandAlliance(1994),theComputers&CommunicationsPrize,(1997)(NEC,Japan),theFrederikPhilipsAwardfromtheIEEE(2000),theNASSCOM(NationalAssociationofSoftwareandServicesCompaniesinIndia)Medal(2000),andtheKilbyMedalfromtheIEEE(2001).DeNetravaliwasanadjunctprofessorattheMassachusettsInstituteofTechnologyandhastaughtgraduatecoursesatCityCollege(N.Y.),ColumbiaUniversityandRutgersUniversity.HehasservedontheeditorialboardoftheIEEE,andiscurrentlyaneditorofseveraljournals・Heservesontheboardofanumberoforganizations.HereceivedhisundergraduatedegreefromtheIndianInstituteofTechnology,Mumbai,India,andmaster"sanddoctoratedegreesfromRiceUniversityinHouston,Texas,allinelectricalengineering.HeholdsanhonorarydoctoratefromtheEcolePolytechniqueFederaleinLausanne,Switzerland・BillO"SheawasthetenthpresidentofBellLabs,andLucentTechnologies1chieftechnologyofficer.HewasresponsibleforresearchanddevelopmentacrossallofLucent.O"SheaalsowasLucenfsexecutivevicepresidentofStrategyandMarketing,inchargeofindustrypartnerships,strategicacquisitions,andthedevelopmentofLucenfsbroadtechnologyplatforms・
